Faythe Harriers Summer Camp Goes from strength to strength
The Faythe Harriers second ever Summer Camp took place last week in Páirc Charman and was a tremendous success for the club with just under eighty children participating. The camp is one of the Club’s initiative to promote hurling camp in the town, other initiatives include provision of hurling coaches to schools and the organizing of tournaments for current members. The camp was organized to facilitate children who wished to spend their week sharpening their hurling/camogie skills in an enjoyable atmosphere. Children from the age of six to fourteen were catered for as the camp extended the age limit from last year. This age extension allowed boys and girls who play under fourteen a chance to participate. The enthusiasm of the children during the whole week was most encouraging for hurling in Wexford and this was clearly seen as they participated in the various skills competitions which included long puck, penalty shots, free taking and side line cuts.
The children were divided according to age and to create a sporting atmosphere they were further divided into county teams. The winning county teams received special medals and all children on the camp received a gold medal in recognition of their participation. There were also special awards for the winners of the skills competitions and the over all fair play award was won by Niamh Butler.
The camp was organised by Eoin Ó Donnagain who was supported and assisted by Brian Walsh. The coaches were members of the Harriers Hurling and Camogie Club. Richie Kehoe and Shane Howard coached the under 14 boys and girls, Lee Murphy, Barry Nolan and Tadhg Carley catered for the under 10s and under 12s. Blathnaid Slaven and Emma Furlong assisted with the under 8s.
Medals and awards were presented by Harrier and County Star Richie Kehoe. The club’s favourite member Larry (Brother) O’Gorman was master of ceremonies ably assisted by Barry Goff. The event was presided over by Club Chairman Pat Murphy.
